Growing Succulents Indoors

Growing Succulents Indoors

For more than eleven years I have been growing succulents. Yes, even before they were on the cover of every household magazine in the supermarket! I truly think plant selection is one of the keys to growing succulents indoors successfully. Look through any gardening website, decorating magazine or go crazy on Pinterest to see the designs and uses for this group of plants. Succulent tables & Bloomingtables

Who doesn’t love succulents? Who also has so many plants that they are running out of space? Just today I was introduced to Bloomingtables and I think this succulent table may be the perfect way to squeeze just a few more plants into our home! This project is still in the KickStarter campaign, but their beautiful design is sure to be a hit. These older posts on growing succulents indoors and succulent terrariums will give you lots of good ideas for succulents that will do well without a ton of light. All of these will keep their great shapes and colors in darker rooms.… Read Full Post
Should I remove succulent flowers?

Should I remove succulent flowers?

This is a tough question. “Should I remove my succulent flowers?” has been asked at more than one presentation over the years. My preference is yes, but let’s look at the pros and cons of both options. An argument for keeping succulent flowers The aeonium flowers above are beautiful on their own. Their bright yellow color is a welcome site in winter. Succulent flowers come in a wide variety of shapes and colors, but most are not nearly as showy as these– and I hate to ruin the ending, but I still cut these off! However, if this is the first time you have seen your succulents flower and you want to experience it for yourself, go ahead and let that baby bloom.… Read Full Post
Everything You Need to Know About Succulents

Everything You Need to Know About Succulents

Cut flowers and potted flowers tend to have reigned supreme for years when it comes to flowers for property interiors. But succulents are rapidly growing in popularity and increasing numbers of us are beginning to add them to the list of plants that we want to incorporate into our homes. So, let’s take a moment to get to know them a little better! What Are Succulents? While many of us will be able to identify succulents apart from other plants in a crowd, relatively few of us actually know all too much about them. Put simply, succulents are plants that store water in their leaves. These leaves are generally thick and fleshy. Some genus of succulents have thicker and fleshier leaves than others.… Read Full Post
Controlling mealybugs on succulents

Controlling mealybugs on succulents

Imagine my surprise when I came across a major mealybug infestation on my succulents. Mealybugs on succulents are not rare, however I was surprised to see just how many I (or rather my aeoniums) had to deal with!  I was cleaning up some plants and as I turned this container a half turn, bam! There they were.  How did I get mealybugs on my succulents? That’s a good question. Quite honestly, they’ve probably always been there, but just not in these numbers. Stressed plants are going to be more favorable to mealybugs, so that may be an indicator which plants need some care. Mealybugs on succulents is common and since I did bring in a lot of plants from outside this fall, I may have accidentally brought these pests indoors too.… Read Full Post

Succulent terrarium

Succulent terrarium

Succulent terrariums are a tricky thing. Pick the wrong plants and they stretch out and turn ugly. Pick the wrong container and, well, same result: ugly. Read on to find out how to easily make your own succulent terrarium that will look great and last for years. Traditional terrariums and succulent are quite different and we need to think about them in different ways.  From the container selection to plants, this is a different process. Traditional Terrariums:   Have an enclosed environment (lids or bottle) that retains moisture. Think of these as their own mini-environment. By not letting any water out, there is the process of evaporation, transpiration and condensation all within this little container. Proper terrariums will not even require additional water to be added.… Read Full Post

Growing Succulents Indoors

Growing Succulents Indoors Succulents are hot right now.  Look through any gardening website, decorating magazine or go crazy on Pinterest to see the designs and uses for this group of plants. From containers to wreaths to temporary installations, succulents have compelling shapes and colors that make them ideal for a wide range of displays.  This article will provide concepts for basic care and design uses that can easily be incorporated into your home and will flourish in low light levels. Care Not surprisingly, succulents will require less frequent watering than most interior plants. Plants that are continually overwatered will be prone to rot, disease and a general decrease in plant vigor. I like to maintain succulents by monitoring the turgidity, or the stiffness of the leaves. … Read Full Post
Creating a succulent container garden display

Creating a succulent container garden display

As part of the Great Yard Renovation of 2016 we created a special succulent container garden display area in our front yard. This was really the part of our landscape design plan about which I was most unsure. But I realize there are times when we all need to step out of our comfort zone (i.e. hedges and groundcovers) and try something new. This project is certainly that. In my mind this achieved several goals: – It cleared all (yes, all!) of my potted plants off our our back deck. This pretty much sold Mike on the whole thing. – It actually gives the succulents better growing conditions. Our front yard is much sunnier than the back. I make the argument that I have to keep these because of the presentations I give on growing succulents in Florida.… Read Full Post
Brain Plants and Pot Heads…

Brain Plants and Pot Heads…

Brain Plants and Pot Heads?  How can you be anything but intrigued by this title? My now infamous “pot heads” all started because of one plant. This guy, an Echinobivia cristata ‘Rainbow Bursts’ that we came across at a nearby Lowes. It was so awesome that Mike actually found it! AND wanted to buy it!  As you might guess, we have a plethora of plants at our house and it is very rare that he thinks we need to buy a plant. It certainly looks like a brain plant, doesn’t it? Even the fissure down the center just screams “brain!” at you. As we were walking around the store looking for a few other odds and ends I offhandedly mentioned that I could make a pot for this where the face would be the bottom part and the top would be open for the “brain plant” to stick out the top.… Read Full Post
