Succulent tables & Bloomingtables
Who doesn’t love succulents? Who also has so many plants that they are running out of space? Just today I was introduced to Bloomingtables and I think this succulent table may be the perfect way to squeeze just a few more plants into our home! This project is still in the KickStarter campaign, but their beautiful design is sure to be a hit. I am a little dubious about plant selection and I think its going to be very important to select the right plants for your location. Should I remove succulent flowers?
This is a tough question. “Should I remove my succulent flowers?” has been asked at more than one presentation over the years. My preference is yes, but let’s look at the pros and cons of both options. An argument for keeping succulent flowers The aeonium flowers above are beautiful on their own. Their bright yellow color is a welcome site in winter. Succulent flowers come in a wide variety of shapes and colors, but most are not nearly as showy as these– and I hate to ruin the ending, but I still cut these off! Controlling mealybugs on succulents
Imagine my surprise when I came across a major mealybug infestation on my succulents. Mealybugs on succulents are not rare, however I was surprised to see just how many I (or rather my aeoniums) had to deal with! I was cleaning up some plants and as I turned this container a half turn, bam! There they were. How did I get mealybugs on my succulents? That’s a good question. Quite honestly, they’ve probably always been there, but just not in these numbers. Stressed plants are going to be more favorable to mealybugs, so that may be an indicator which plants need some care. Succulent terrariums are a tricky thing. Pick the wrong plants and they stretch out and turn ugly. Pick the wrong container and, well, same result: ugly. Creating a succulent container garden display
As part of the Great Yard Renovation of 2016 we created a special succulent container garden display area in our front yard. This was really the part of our landscape design plan about which I was most unsure. But I realize there are times when we all need to step out of our comfort zone (i.e. hedges and groundcovers) and try something new. This project is certainly that. In my mind this achieved several goals: – It cleared all (yes, all!) of my potted plants off our our back deck. This pretty much sold Mike on the whole thing. – It actually gives the succulents better growing conditions. Our front yard is much sunnier than the back. Brain Plants and Pot Heads…
Brain Plants and Pot Heads? How can you be anything but intrigued by this title? My now infamous “pot heads” all started because of one plant. This guy, an Echinobivia cristata ‘Rainbow Bursts’ that we came across at a nearby Lowes. It was so awesome that Mike actually found it! AND wanted to buy it! As you might guess, we have a plethora of plants at our house and it is very rare that he thinks we need to buy a plant. It certainly looks like a brain plant, doesn’t it? Even the fissure down the center just screams “brain!” at you.
